Strategic Plan

CFID formally adopted a revised Strategic Plan for 2011-2013 at its Board of Directors meeting on June 28, 2011. The original version of the Strategic Plan was developed by the Board during a two-day facilitated planning session on March 27 and 28, 2010. The group reviewed and expanded the environmental scan information, engaged in visioning and idea generation exercises, reviewed the mission and vision statemens, and developed goals, objectives, and preliminary implementation strategies.

Goal One: Focus and Position Research Support

1.1 Establish a clear research agenda

  • Establish research priorities related to new investigators, pilot projects, and trainee projects
  • Prepare guidelines and criteria for applications and and funding including upper limits on grant amounts
  • Allocate funds as they become available
  • Issue annual calls for proposals

Goal Two: Expand Fundraising

2.1 Secure funding from an expanded range of sources and for alternative initiatives.

  • Fundraising to be accomplished by the Board until such time as financial status permits hiring of a professional fundraiser or Director of Development

2.2 Further develop a fundraising focus building on the underlying concepts of National Infectious Disease Day (NIDD)

  • Partner with AMMI, CACMID, and others on this initiative
  • Develop annual educational/advocacy event
  • Develop webinars for public education

2.3 Develop a knowledge center for Canadian-specific information on infectious diseases among different provinces within Canada:

  • Epidemiological trends, including age-specific incidence and prevalence rates
  • Diagnosis, treatment and patient outcome implications of specific infections of interest
  • Antimicrobial resistance rates for healthcare-associated and community pathogens
  • Incidence rates and disease burden of viral respiratory infections, gastrointestinal infections, sexually transmitted infections, viral hepatitis, HIV/AIDS, others
  • Re-design the CFID website to accommodate this objective

Goal Three: Raise Profile and Increase Outreach

3.1 Highlight infectious disease priorities for the public through multi-media campaigns

3.2 Work with stakeholders on common goals and issues

3.3 Foster strong government relations

3.4 Establish the CFID brand

Goal Four: Develop the Foundation

4.1 Create a three-year financial plan

  • Establish one-year budget and prepare budgets for years 2 and 3
  • Review current investments and settle outstanding commitments
  • Reassess administrative support from in-kind donations
  • Review existing awards and other financial commitments
  • Assess potential revenues for maximum impact
  • Seek unrestricted funding to support infrastructure

4.2 Develop and maintain an organizational infrastructure to execute strategic goals

  • Evaluate needs based on objectives
  • Update CFID website

4.3 Create a governance model to ensure effective Board structure, succession, policies and procedures

  • Establish criteria and guidelines for Foundation membership
  • Continue to refine policies and procedures for governance
  • Refresh Board membership
  • Establish terms of reference and update bylaws as necessary
